The Coastal Fund Photo Contest 2008-2009
THE COASTAL FUND WANTS YOU!
Do you like the beach? What about taking pictures? If you have a knack for coastal photography, you should submit your work to the Coastal Fund for our annual photography contest! You could win all kinds of prizes, including gift cards to Patagonia Outdoor Apparel and the UCSB bookstore, as well as publicity in The Daily Nexus, the Coastal Fund’s new website, and in all sorts of Coastal Fund promotional material.
What we want from you:
We ask UC Santa Barbara students, faculty, and staff to actively engage in the Coastal Fund mission statement by taking photos that demonstrate respect and appreciation for the local beaches.
Don’t just take a picture of the ocean – try to capture something meaningful ABOUT the local coastal environment – to the effect of people interacting with the coast, through activities like surfing or sunbathing, or people proactively helping the coastline by methods like cleaning debris off the beaches.
Please submit one photo, as well as a brief 2 to 3 sentence summary of what your photograph is trying to capture, to the Coastal Fund. The summary must include which beach your photograph was taken. E-mail all submissions to
coastalfund@gmail.com by Friday, February 6th, at midnight.
The Associated Student’s Coastal Fund strives to protect and preserve our local coastline for future generations, through preservation, education, open-access, research and restoration. Some actions coordinated by the Coastal Fund that benefit the UCSB community include beach clean-ups, restoration work and financial support of environmental projects and programs around the local UCSB community.
The first, second and third-place winners will be announced Tuesday, February 24th.
GRAND PRIZE:
First Place Receives
$200 gift card to Patagonia Surf shop
Second Place Receives
$100 gift card to the UCSB Bookstore
Third Place Receives
$50 gift card to Jamba Juice
In addition, all finalists will gain exposure on the Coastal Fund’s new website and be featured on future Coastal Fund promotional material, including stickers, magnets, and informational pamphlets, etc.
The Coastal Fund board will judge the photos based on how well the photograph demonstrates an enriching human-coast relationship and follows our mission statement.

RULES
This year’s theme is “The heart of UCSB”
The goal of this competition is to capture in a photograph the essence of why UCSB and its intimate involvement with the ocean make it such an amazing place to live and go to school. You know what we mean: As a freshman living in the dorms, you wake up every morning to smell the ocean and hear the migrating gray whales. As a senior living on Del Playa, you travel less than 20 feet to the beachfront to surf. As a professor, your office overlooks the Channel Islands.
E-mail submission requirements: 1MB max; 72 dpi; RGB or grayscale; longest side of image dimensions must not exceed 1024 pixels; files must be saved as .jpg (lowercase jpg) at "high" or "maximum" quality. One jpg entry per person (jpg may be a single photograph or a series of photographs saved as one jpg)
Entries must be submitted by midnight on Friday, February 6th, 2009 at midnight. There is no entry fee for this competition. Winners will be announced by Tuesday, February 24th, 2009.
Photographs submitted to the competition may be used by the Coastal Fund for educational and promotional purposes directly related to the activities of the Coastal Fund.
All exhibition prints become the property of the Coastal Fund.
Winners will be invited to the Coastal Fund’s spring reception.
